. THOSE
GOOD OLD DAYS – THEY WERE TERRIBLE by Otto L. Bettman Published by Random House
1974 Bettman explores the period from the Civil War to
the early 1900’s, describing life for the average citizen as a life of unremitting hardship. Child labor, no protective
or work condition requirements, no hospitalization or medical help for the masses, lack of plumbing, water, energy conveniences…..Bettman
gives a voice to those who lived through hard times that knew only a privileged few and suffering masses. His historic
knowledge and presentation gives us a clearer picture of what our ancestors had to go through and endure, for us to be where
we are today.

. . BOOK NANCY RECOMMENDS Since tomorrow is the presentation of the 2009 Academy Awards, I thought this
would be the perfect book for movie lovers
THE ACADEMY AWARDS –
The Complete History of Oscar By Gail Kinn and Jim Piazza Published 2002 by Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers For the movie lover, this is a fabulous book. Beginning with the first awards in 1927 and through 2001,
it has photos of the major winners, a complete list of all of the nominees in the major categories, and commentary about the
event itself and the people who accepted the awards. It is a wonderful history of Hollywood and the people who, through
the decades, have made it the factory of dreams. . . NANCY’S
MOVIE SUGGESTION OF THE WEEK BOFFO! - Tinseltown’s Bombs & Blockbusters
The best words to describe this are fun and fascinating. Hollywood greats talk about making
movies, loving movies, soaring with the successes, and suffering the failures. Listening to these folks talk about the
movies that are very much the fiber of American movie culture is like going to a delightful history class on Hollywood.
Among the legends who talk on this DVD are: George Clooney, Danny DeVito, Peter Bogdanovich, Steven Spielberg, Sydney
Pollack, Jodi Foster, Pierce Brosnan, and more. 75 minutes long, and well worth your time.

MARSHALL There are so many websites that reference Jim Marshall, from his career statistics to personal
data and biographical information, to the drive to get Jim named to the Football Hall of Fame. Go to www.google.com, and search JIM MARSHALL.
BOOK NANCY RECOMMENDS MAN
OF THE HOUSE The life and Political Memoirs of Speaker Tip O'Neill, Published by Random House 1987 This
book is an amazing and fascinating journey through fifty years of American history. It combines O’Neill’s
colorful past with much of our nation’s past as well. Politics was very different when O’Neill entered it
in 1936. He worked with every president from FDR to Reagan, the Warren commission on the Kennedy assassination, Nixon
and Watergate, Johnson and Vietnam. This is an extraordinary and candid discussion of fifty years of political life,
and politics as it was. I recommend it very highly.
NANCY’S MOVIE SUGGESTION OF THE WEEK REMEMBER THE TITANS Produced
2000, Starring Denzel Washington The true story of High School Football Coach, Herman Boone. In 1971 he was hired to coach
at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. He proceeds to do the impossible and the nearly unforgivable….he
puts his white and black players together as a TEAM in training camp, insisting they room together, eat together, and play
together…crossing many color barriers for the first time. Along the way there is controversy, anger, hatred,
and enlightenment. This is a story of tremendous hope and feel good. A movie truly worth seeing. I think
it is fine family viewing for anyone 10 and over. . .
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13:
MOVIES
NANCY RECOMMENDS These movies are, I believe,
very special. They are ultimately uplifting in their message, and since February is BLACK HISTORY MONTH, I think they
are especially important to watch. THE GREAT DEBATERS is a true story that takes place at all-Black Wylie College in Marshall, Texas, in 1935. Professor
Melvin Tolson raises his debate team of three men and one woman to extraordinary levels, and ultimately achieves the impossible
when the greatest debate team in America, all-white Harvard, agrees to a debate. So historic is a debate between
whites and blacks that it is aired on the radio across the nation. The journey to this extraordinary event takes them
through unimaginable challenges in the segregated and bigoted south of 1935. Everything about this movie is spectacular. Starring Academy Award Winners Denzel Washington and Forrest Whitaker,
is it also directed by Denzel, and produced in 2007 by Oprah Winfrey. Good viewing for ages 12 and above. There is no bad language, there is a love scene
between two students but no nudity, there is a brief moment of a lynching by a KKK mob. Somewhat disturbing in its reality,
but ultimately hopeful and uplifting. I
believe THE GREAT DEBATERS is a MUST.
A FAMILY THING was written by the unusual Billy Bob Thorton, once married to Angelina Jolie, and Academy Award winner for his screen
play SLING BLADE. This extraordinary movie runs head on into the face of bigotry in one of the most unusual ways I have
ever seen.
Starring the brilliant Robert Duvall and James Earl Jones the story takes us through heartbreak,
shock, hatred, anger, new found awareness and enlightenment. Robert Duvall is a real Arkansas Southern cracker, James
Earl Jones is a Chicago Cop. When Duvall’s mother dies she leaves a letter for him, telling him the truth about
himself. She tells him that she did not give birth to him. Rather he was born to a black woman, a lady she loved
who used to work for her. Turns out his father raped the woman. She gave birth to this little boy who was absolutely
white. She died in child birth, and Duvall’s mother, or the woman he thought was his mother, took him home and
raised him. She wants him to know that he has a brother in Chicago, and she wants him to go and meet his real family.
Stunned to learn that he is half black…he does as his mother asked, he drives to Chicago and his journey of discovery
begins. These two astonishing actors make
this movie funny, sad, beautiful…… Irma P. Hall plays the lovable Aunt T……. Good for ages 12 and up, there is no bad language or sex scenes. I think this is one of the most impressive movies ever made. I can’t recommend it highly enough. BOOK
NANCY RECOMMENDS PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED
STATES, by Elizabeth Andrews is a wonderful book, especially for anyone who loves history. 127 pages long, there are several
pages of text and pictures of every president from George Washington to Barack Obama. Many of the things written about
are new historic tidbits making it great fun. But the really unusual thing about this book is that you can listen to
recordings of segments from various speeches each of the presidents has made. Over 50 recordings. This book
is a real treasure. The history buff will love it, and it is especially nice to be able to share this with a young person
you would like to have an appreciation for history. Published in September 2009 by Publishers International.
